Iguana Enclosure

iguanafan May 30, 2009 02:15 PM

I'm planning on getting an iguana but before i do i decided to have everything ready for him/her.I'm very handy and i like to DIY everything that I can.I've been told to have an enclosure ready for the iguana with the temp and humidity all setup.I've also been informed it sames money in the long run to have the enclosure fit to hold the iguanas full size.So being the DIY person I am, I've decided to make my own enclosure. The question is how big and if i should use glass, Plexiglas, or mesh screening for the windows. So far i've got a 5'tall 4'long and 3'wide iguana enclosure blueprints with a screen top, 2 side viewing windows and a double door front opening.I need advice on the window material and if the enclosure will last at least acouple years or will the iguana out grow it?Any and all advice is welcome thank you.

I have had iguanas break both glass and plexi. Plexi is much less dangerous if broken. For DIY folks I really like the plans in the back of James Hatfields book. Very detailed and an excellent cage.

WOW! didn't realize they could be that strong.Well I decided to go with the plex and I saw the designs for the enclosure you suggested. Its amazing! But you see a DIY person is also a cheap person. So I will probably break down and go for that enclosure when I get my own place.I made my enclosure a little smaller for starters and when my iguana out grows it I'll make it a castle.LOL!My enclosure is now a 2.5'depth by 4'long by 4'tall.I also decided on one viewing window.I'll post pictures when its painted and my iguana is happy.I'm nearly down and it only took a day.
