Biak X Biak outcross Hatchlings

Kevin_Arbogast Jun 03, 2009 11:31 PM

I came very close with these guys last year, but this year things went well. My female laid 22 fertile eggs and 11 of them went bad in the first week, but the last 11 emerged as big healthy babies. I have been waiting awhile to hatch out some chondros and now it's time to get them started.

Here are pics of all except one that hasn't shed yet.

Mom on eggs

I have tested a couple of them to see if they are ready to eat and they readily constrict the pinky but then let go. Also I was using live pinks, should I use frozen thawed? Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Kevin

Awesome looking clutch! I've not had chondros hatch yet, but with my baby amazons I fed f/t pinkies. I made sure they were very hot using almost boiling water to heat the head a second before I fed. I offered at night and once they grabbed, I let it go. If they dropped it, I tried holding it with the tongs and wiggling until they held on.

Thanks for the advise Meg. I actually used the exact same method you described Friday night and had 7 out of 11 eat for me. The 4 that didn't eat all constricted so maybe next time for them.

Sounds like you're well on your way to getting them all feeding. I see you use moss which is great. I had excellent feed responses when I changed from plain paper towels and no cover to moss with cover for my amazons. Seems the greater feeling of security made them more apt to eat. Hope to hear that you've had complete success next feeding cycle.
