Found these skinks in Kansas

joecop Jun 09, 2009 05:13 PM

Was at the in-laws house last week and the neighbor asked me to remove as many of these from his property that I could. (afraid of them) I released them down the road. Great Plains skinks?

By the way they were 11-13 inches long!

Those are Great Plains skinks (Eumeces obsoletus). They supposedly are the largest skinks in North America, but some people say Broadheads are the largest. Selling any???

I let them all go brother. If you are looking for some and don't mind paying the shipping I can get some the next time I go to KS. The guy does not want them on his farm and I will not sell W/C animals for profit.

Why doesn't he want them on his land? Does he know that they eat bugs??? I just can't imagine his mindset, but then I have loved lizards for as long as I can remember.

I have been looking for some of these for an education program that a friend of mine runs. They are a perfect subject because the female tends the eggs and hatchlings, and that behavior really helps to change people's attitudes toward reptiles. If you can't release some and need to find a good home, let me know, too. She and I both have experience with wc lizards.

I will be out there later in the year and will let you know. I am sure I can find some on that guys farm again. I told him he was crazy for not wanting them and the snakes around but you know how some people are just scared of them and nothing you say will change their minds. Too bad I did not find any nice snakes on his property too!

Joe,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Yes I would be interested in a few. If you want I can mail you my email and just let me know when you are out there in KS again.
