Filter Questions or Help

retaks13mac Jun 10, 2009 06:52 PM

Alright, I have a 75g, a 90g and soon to be a 120g or larger. Right now I am using a Fuval 4 in both the 75g and the 90g and they are working alright but I really want to get something better then those. What are come people experiences with filters for larger tank like those? I want something thats strong and will keep the water and clear as possiable and is not super complicated. I would like anyone and everyones input on some good filters for large tanks that work well. I do not mind if it is a canister filter, a submersable filter or anything, I am open to all suggestions doesnt matter what they are.

Also these tanks are not filled to the top, most are half way full so the filters that hang over the side and are used with fish tanks are not possible to use.

I don't know exactly what the name of the filters are, but you'd have to fill your tank at least 3/4 full, and it has a jet pump with a strong output and tube that sucks the water up and through a filter tray. It also fits into this tray that spans length-wise across your tank, and which then circulates the water through foam filters in the tray. The filters themselves are easily changed and quite cheap to buy.

I had three 5-6" turtles in such a setup and it kept it crystal clear.

I made one of these filters

for my 100 and 130 gallon ponds. I scaled it down as these are for large ponds. I used a 5 gallon bucket for the filter, then attached a got a large pond pump. It works well and is pretty easy to make.

build or buy a simple DIY wet/dry and use 2 DIY overflows, one draining from bottom of tank, one draining from the top. DIY overflow design is in the link
