looking to get a GTP

Kingmorph69 Jun 11, 2009 08:08 PM

Hi, i'm looking to get a GTP but i've always heard that they're mean and they're messy eaters. If anyone has some advice or tips it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I do have experiance with pythons, I just want something new and interesting to work with.

Out of 9 chondros, I only have 2 that are nasty. I'm not sure what you mean by messy eaters. Mine eat well and pretty much grab and wrap a frozen/thawed mouse or rat off tongs without fuss. No mess that I can see.

I have a friend who used to keep green tree pythons and said that when they eat live they get alot of blood everywhere, so thats why i wanted to know because there are younger children in my house so i would not want them to see some "grotesque" feeding. Thank you for your advice.

I've never fed live so I have no idea. I don't have any snake that won't take f/t prey and I won't keep one that does. They have a pretty formidable bite, so I'm sure whatever gets bitten if alive will bleed pretty profusely.

I have 2 males that will only eat live so they get well stunned live until I can convince them otherwise. 1 came eating live, 1 came eating nothing. They are no messier than those who eat F/T. I don't feed them large prey animals, they each get adult mice as their largest meal. Not much blood to drip there. I can see a med rat making a bit of a mess, but I stick to mice with my chondros so I wouldn't know. Buy your first chondros from someone who's established them on F/T and you'll be all set.

As for temperament, mine range from those who totally ignore the maid service to those who appear to enjoy coming out for a visit. They tend to be feisty at night so its wise to leave them alone then, but they're often just fine during the day.
