What skink for a 40 breeder?

varanid Jun 15, 2009 11:09 AM

I'm doing the cage shuffle in about a month and will be moving a baby python from his 40 breeder. I've worked with reptiles for about 15 years, but I've never kept skinks. I'm thinking of Schieders, Blue tongues, sandfish and fire skinks. As I understand it, a 40 breeder would be big enough for one BTS, or a pair of Schnieders, or a group of sandfish or fire skinks.

Any thoughts on the relative merits of those? Or other suggestions as to what sort of skinks would be good?

I think a 40 breeder is too small for a BTS. They are big lizards, and unless you take it out for exercise daily, that seems awfully small.

I keep fire skinks, and think they are just stunning! A group would work well in a tank that size, and you could have fun with it. I have a pair in an enclosure about that size on organic potting soil. I am trying plants, but they keep uprooting them. Mine have bred, but I did not find the eggs in time. I think they are breeding again, though. These two eat out of my hand and surface frequently. They make really wonderful and beautiful pets.

I really don't know much about Schneider's skinks.
