Constantly trying to escape

waldo Jun 17, 2009 10:36 PM

I have a pair of juvie orange Geyri that live in a large cage together. They have plenty of hiding spots, some nice and tight, some bigger.
Everyday, early afternoon they both start frantically trying to escape their cage, digging at the glass, in corners and climbing the vents. They barely take time to stop and eat and are constantly on the move. I thought it might be because they are wild caught and hoped they would settle down but they are getting worse.
Today they figured out how to get the slider door open and both escaped, one I found running across the floor, the other was found a few hours later.
Any ideas on what I can do to stop this frantic digging? Will they ever tame down at all? Their cage is wood with plexi glass doors and I'm working on a way to lock the doors so I won't have any more escapes.

More details on the enclosure would be good to know... building material, was it sealed, painted, etc. temps, size.

WC geyri can be difficult to acclimate. They will do a lot of glass dancing, even mine that are CB will glass dance almost every day. Doesn't usually last long, but they may do it for 5 minutes a day or so.

The cage is 4'X2'X3' made from white melamine with sliding plexi glass doors. It has two large vents, one on each end. The UVB light is 48" long and I use a repti sun 10.0. The heat light is just a cheap floodligh. The temps as of now are 114* F on the basking rock, 81* F at the coolest end. The only sealer used was white silicon.

I made the enclouser myself 5 years ago. It housed a bearded dragon for most of that time. I am going to make a screen door for one side so there is a bit more ventalation.
These uro's technically aren't mine, I'm watching them for a bit. I'm trying to decide if I'd like to get one of my own or go for another bearded dragon. I really like the uro's but I want something tame. These two are starting to tail whip and I can see them always being wild.
