question about my new frogs

abstractart1026 Jun 19, 2009 08:25 AM

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and I have a question about one of our green tree frogs. We got two of them on Fridayand on Sunday morning when we were getting ready for church we noticed that one of the frogs had died. we got a new one to replace it on tuesday and bought a thermometer to keep better track of the temp in the habitat. Both of the frogs have been doing well since then but the one that survived is acting kind of funny this morning. He has tried jumping out a couple times which has resulted in him slamming his head into the screen top on the tank and he is rubbing his legs on his body like he is trying to clean himself off. I'm not actually sure if he is a boy but it was croaking for a couple min one night and i heard only the males croak. Is he freaking out or is this just normal? Any advice would be appreciated. This is my first time caring for frogs.

Both the rubbing and jumping behaviors are normal. Can you tell me more about the enclosure though? Lighting? Dimensions? Etc? It could shed some light as to why the first one died.

the enclosure is a 10 gallon tank but it is wider than it is tall. i learned after the fact that it is more preferable for tree frogs to have a tall tank so they can climb more. on the bottom we have something called eco earth substrate. There are three rocks on one end and two rocks at the other end and there is one branch that extends from one bottom corner to the diagonal opposiste top corner. the high end of the branch is on the side that the light is aimed at. the lamp is made for a maximum 75 watt bulb but it has a 50 watt bulb in it. it is positioned on a clamp on the edge of the screen top. it points to the side opposite of the water dish. we have been changing the water in the water dish daily and adding 3 small crickets for each of the two frogs daily in the late afternoon. I don't know if there is a way to make sure they are each eating since they eat while we are asleep, but the crickets are being eaten. Thanks you. If you have any ideas about why the first one died, i would appreciate it. I would like to avoid killing anymore.

Hmmm well you seem to be doing everything right. The 10 gallon should be fine though but if you ever want to get more I would upgrade and get an aboreal one. Keep up on the daily water changes they are so so so important, try to get it from de-chorlinated water though, too much cholorine can kill them but I dont think that that is what happend to yours. Sometimes the stress of the move is just to much or it could have obtained a parasite prior to you purchasing it. I cant imagine starvation would be an option either, however frogs can deal with surprisingly large mouthful and you can usually feed them something as big as their mouth, so you could probably move from small to medium crikets. I would say it was stress though just due to how fast it happened. Which really theres not much you can do about that. Hope your others are doing well~!
