Yes, those are wild American Crocs near my Farm. The small one in the pic is 8' long and the large is like 14' plus which is the largest wild one I've seen in Florida although I've had a couple bigger....

Here are pics of 2 wild females....

PHFaust Jun 23, 2009 01:25 AM

Does that gator have a name? Or perhaps a toe tag?

I work with the boys from the Chicago Herp Society and Colorado took several of our gators a while back. Wondering the chances that it is my beloved Middle or Rental.

yes we do have many gators from chicago, but this is not one of those. this one is one of our originals gators hes been with us about 22years.
about how old would the ones you are speaking of be now? i could try and find out but those names dont sound familiar...we have over 400 gators at the property.

oh and the gator in the pics name is Goliath.

Taking that pic was obviously a thrill for you as it should be.
In the future however I would watch where I placed my fingers.
I'm sure that gator is "dog tame" but future animals...
I just would'nt have my fingers there. Fine gator. Very interesting lower jaw. D.C.

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Jun 23, 2009 09:20 AM

I should add to that by saying if you have your fingers there in the jaw crease and it closes it's mouth with force [about 2,000 psi] it will amputate or crush your fingers instantly...thanks...Danny is correct just not as graphic as I...

Tom
Actually I was going to use the whole pecan cracker leverage comparison. But then I figured anyone that young probably never cracked pecans.
I remember having my thumb in a similar place in the mouth of a 5 foot Morelets. When I did get my thumb out after an unsuccessful death roll. I had a towel on my thumb(the bleeding was minimal) but I kept walking around my wife said I kept saying the same thing,"that really really hurt."
I don't remember it much. But it doesn't need to happen again.
Obviously a 5 foot Morelets is a toy compared to that big boy. D.C.

goini04 Jun 23, 2009 05:37 PM

The mandible on that boy is a monster! Very interesting, indeed!

yea it can be dangerous but it is also one of the safer places to have your fingers when grabbing a gators head, that area is mostly fatty tissue.
but thanks for the concern.

VERY cool pic Krystal, must have been exciting for you!! What facility is the new job at?

Not even close to being as coll as your pic but my son got to show off a bit last year over at Tony & Flavio's place which had him pretty excited. Pic below, notice his driving the gator position. lol

Oh and like Tom and Danny said, watch those fingers .. if need be its better/safer to get a good hold of the skin flap under the lower jaw.

Who likes the pic but finds alligator 'wrestling' distasteful and frankly an activity that should be shunned rather than embraced?

I am with you they should be left alone in their enclosure and young ones can be brought out to do educational shows.LEAVE THEM ALONE.HANDS OFF UNLESS IT IS MEDICALLY NEEDED.Just my point of view.
-----

Krystal_R Jun 27, 2009 11:19 PM

maybe... everyone is entitled to there own opinions....but it doesn't hurt the gators one bit, we don't do it everyday, and the gators that get caught get medicated and treated if needed.

Not to be argumentative but if it doesn't hurt them one bit why do they get medicated and treated? Or is that for ailments from other gator/gator activities?

In my view whether it hurts them or not is rather beside the point. It just doesn't seem very dignified for such an impressive animal. It's so 50's sideshow. In 2009 I think we can do better.

It is possible to do a thrilling educational show with these animals without these types of activities.

But your correct, opinions vary.

i didnt realize that my post would cause so much trouble!

just thought i would share some of my fun! and yes they are amazing creatures... and it makes it so much better when you get the chance to be so close to them....

sorry for getting so many people upset.....n its not like we actually wrestle the gators... we catch them and hold or sometimes sit on them....

its an awesome time.....

...oh and BTW we will be on Animal Planet very soon... so be sure to check out our episodes... and it will explain alot more about our facility and maybe it will make some people feel better..maybe not....

bivittatus Jun 28, 2009 09:48 AM

The issue I have (and this is not a personal attack on you at all but a comment on your facility and some of its practices) is that many of the pics on your web site show Alligators being handled in very stressful manners by people who seem to just want to have their picture taken with a "big ol' gator". Sitting on their back and pulling them upright is a horrible way to restrain a gator. Also what is up with the alligator handling class is there really that much need in Colorado for people to be skilled in alligator handling. And what is Gatorfest by the pictures it seems to just be people seeing who can pull the biggest alligator out of a pond.

-----
Archie Bottoms

CDieter Jun 29, 2009 04:10 PM

It didn't cause any trouble, just people offering different perspectives. Personally I find alligator wrestling style shows repugnant and little more than carnival acts. They offer nothing other than cheap thrills at the expense of a captive animal.

We keep a large group of crocodilians and we rarely move the big guys. It is simply to stressful on them so it is only very rarely that we do so. No one likes to be close to them more than I do but I'm not going to drag one onshore just for a giggle. I can appreciate them from close range without roping and dragging the big fella out.

I'm sure everyone has a blast at these events-except the alligators. Ithink I echo pretty much what bivittatus said as well. I cannot tell you how many times we have turned down events because we refuse to do an alligator 'wrestling' show.

But as mentioned opinions vary. No hard feelings here.
