stevie is dying.../ digestion trouble

collaredsguy Jun 28, 2009 01:04 PM

i tried all i could but stevie is just not recovering, and i think he is on his last leg. just trying to make him cofortable and make sure hes peaceful. thanks everyone for your help, i really appreciate it.

im noticeing my lizards are having trouble keeping food down, and im guessing the temperature is too low, anything else i can do? is it caused by over eating as well? ive been having trouble getting the right temperature since i moved the tank around. thanks.

So sorry to hear this Guy, makes us feel just terrible ( I know)

You mention they are having problems keeping food down, temperature is a big factor to look at for sure, but when they have worms they will throw up thier meals as well, and lose weight/ lethargic,,, so forth. You may want to get a fecal done on one of them, and see if they are having any intestinal parasite problems.

I am really sorry about Stevie, Guy. I know you have tried your best.

I agree that you MUST get your temps straightened out. They really can't digest well without proper basking temps, and dehydrate and become impacted without a cool down area.

I also agree that a fecal is definitely warranted.

Do you keep your collareds on sand? If so, please consider taking them OFF of it ASAP at least until the digestion issues are resolved.

Don't give up! Its tough if a parasite infestation has cropped up beside the RI, I had a beardie go through it. Many animals carry a low level bioburden of parasites that the immune system keeps in check until the animal falls ill then the bioburden gets out of hand. Have a fecal done, supplement any antibiotics for parasites with Parazap. For the antibiotics and stomach digestion in general supplement the animal with a probiotic such as Acidophilz . Disinfect the cage with a 5% solution of bleach and bake the cage furniture. Place the animals on paper and replace the paper as soon as there is any feces. Disinfect weekly to break any direct life cycle of parasites!

steve died last night. gave him a nice barial and i know the poor boy is in lizard heaven now. its a bad feeling, but i know hes in a better place. glad he doesnt have to suffer anymore.

i finally got the temps up for my guys, and i havent been seeing any puking so i think its ok. i also tried feeding them at an earlier time, say noon instead of 4 or 5, so they have more time to digest their food. does anyone think that feeding them at certain times is a good way to ensure they digest properly. i dont think its mites or parasites, my guys seem pretty good in that regard, its just been since i moved their tank around i havent had the temps right, and they werent keeping food down, but i think its ok. thanks everyone. ill keep an eye on this.

Sorry to here that! When feeding they should have time to warm up there blood if its in the morning or time to digest before the heat goes off if its evening. You still might consider having a fecal done to check for prasites. Finally regurgitation can sometimes be a sign gorging, give them as much as they might eat in 5 minute period or 10 minutes if its something they have to chase around like crickets. Remove anything thats left over, also what are you feeding, for some reason mine will regurgitate butter worms so I don't bother feeding these!

I'm sorry, Guy. At least he's at peace now. And I'm glad your others seem to be doing better.

Guy, that's sad, I hate when ya lose one.

I did want to say, you should make sure they are fed atleast 3 hours before lights go out so they can digest properly. Just keep an eye on things ( as far as the others) if they continue to throw up even with temps where they should be, get the fecal done on one, and see if it is "internal". Gorging can cause this, but if they eat normally and just throw up piles of undigested food, than surely their is a problem.

If everybody does well from now on, than your good to go. Again sorry ya lost Stevie. Sure hope they will be fine. Let us know how they are from time to time.

You really don't know how attached you are to these little Darlin's until you lose one. I hope the rest continue to improve.

thanks everyone for the condolances, it hurts that i couldnt do more for him, but i knows hes at peace now.

all of these guys are healthy that are regurgitating, i recently moved the tanks around in my room and the problem was immediate they were under a vent that was blowing cool air on them, i moved the tank away from the vent, and up the wattage on the heat and lighting sorces (i do use MVB) and im also going to feed them earlier in the day. my sisters happened to feed them at about 6 pm on friday because they went to get food for me and i was out, and thats about an hour before lights out and the day after is when i noticed it the most. so i will feed them earlier, say noon, and make sure they dont gorge themselves. they just had wax and super worms for lunch so they are all pretty happy. (they were throwing up everything btw, so i thinkit was time of feeding and temperture what were the issue) im not seeing any more regurgitation so i think it s ok. ill keep an eye on them tho.
