20 gallon long or Exo Terra?

LisaJ Jul 08, 2009 05:48 PM

Hi, I wondered what people's opinions were about housing for a single garter pet (not sure yet whether I'll be getting male or female. I do realize there's a size difference). I was originally planning on getting a 20 gallon long aquarium (or start with a 10 if I get a baby). I noticed those gorgeous Exo Terra terrariums with the front-opening doors. I liked the sound of doors that open to the front and I like how they look. But the dimensions are different than with the aquarium. They tend to be taller but not as long. Either 18 x 18 x 24 or 24 x 18 x 18. Do garters climb? Having it taller, with more branches might be OK then. I do wonder if they aren't long enough though. I liked the looks of the Visionariums, which have the same dimensions as the 20 gallon long with front sliding doors. But I read some opinions about those and some people have had escapes with them. So far I haven't read any bad reviews of the Exo Terra. Any thoughts would be welcome.

hello lisa ... depends on the sub-species. It's been my experience that O_Red Spots are ground dwellers and pretty much hide all of the time unless they are hungry. E_Black_Necks were always up high in their enclosure. Pugets are are always out and about everywhere exploring and probably would like to climb about.

best of luck : )
