Babybugs besides crickets?

JackAsp Jul 09, 2009 11:05 PM

At the next herp expo, I'm thinking about getting a D. hydei colony, just so when (hopefully) the eggs hatch I have have something besides pinheads I can offer them. Is it worth doing? What else are good options for hatchlings? Small silkworms?

I feed my hatchlings two week crix for the first week, and they can handle 3 wk crix after that. You really don't need to start with pin heads.

The babies will eat the silks if they get their attention when they are first dropped in, but they really go for fast movement.Mine have also occasionally gone for pheonix worms, but only if I run out of crix ad they are hungry.

Once my collared hatchlings were feeding well on crickets, I offered them tiny pieces of vegetables. If you start them on vegetables when they are young, they will continue to eat them as adults.

The older babies play in the salad bowl and it is all gone by days end! The younger ones at least lick at theirs.

I don't know if they've been eating salad or not, but they certainly know what crickets are for. The expo's on Sunday, so I can load up on baby crickets and, probably, silkworms. Otherwise, I'll send away for the silks afterwords.
So are the Drosphilia hydei worth getting while I'm there? Even if they're not necessary bto raise as a staple, are they nutritious/palatable enough to be worth getting as feeders? Are adults more desireable than larva, or vice versa?

Unless you already have frogs or day geckos or something that will eat the fruit flies, then they're probably not worth the effort. They're just so small they won't be enough for collareds. Mine are nearly two months old now and will still eat phoenix worms, though. They like the (very) occasional butterworm. And my nephew brings me wild grasshoppers for a dime apiece - the collareds LOVE those!
