Vermiculite: Toss or reuse?

Rosebuds Jul 10, 2009 04:14 PM

Let me start by saying that whoever said that it was hard to get collareds to breed or hatch just flat lied! LOL! I don't mean you, Boost. I know you mentioned some literature a few months ago. I have both WT females laying and the darned easterns have that stupid, "I'm makin' eggs!" grin, again!!

So, right before laying season I bought a jumbo sized bag of verm. It is almost empty! Do I need to go out and buy another jumbo bag, or is it okay to wet and reuse verm if the eggs and babies were all healthy? Does it loose its antifungal or moisture retaining properties or is there a chance that it will harbor bacteria? How about microwaving it between uses?

I toss mine, just my opinion, incase any mold or bacteria has formed from it sitting all that time, I would not put newly layed eggs in it.

Others may have different opinion/thoughts.

and on the stuff I reused(because I can't get the dang stuff) a green almost moss type mold formed on the eggs and killed them.

Tom, where in the world are you that you can't get vermiculite? can I send you some?

Thanks. I am trying to raise more hibiscus, so I'll just use it in my plant pots.
