buttermilks just hatched 7/18 photos

raindrops Jul 19, 2009 12:07 PM

Yesterday morning I got a nice surprise when I looked in the buttermilk eggs. Eight babies had already made it out and there were seven more to go. They have all hatched and seem very healthy. I used hatchrite at around 82-83 degrees. I thought I'd post some pics since this isn't a commonly bred species.

Here's a link to a gallery of a few of the pictures.

Several of the pictures are of an especially blue baby. They were all a rather bluish shade with dark red markings (that faded towards tail) but the shade of blue differed. I've also got some with brighter markings and one with way more speckled markings. I'm not sure how these differences effect them if at all since the coloration changes though. But they sure are cute!

I'm keeping them really warm and I think I'll probably wait til they first shed then try them on crickets and if I'm lucky pinkies. Anybody have any tricks for getting the babies started?

Congrats!

I have heard crickets and lizards but juvy racers seem to like crickets from what I hear.

Congrats on hatching those babies out! As far as feeding goes, I've had great success raising up little black racers on anoles. They had an OK feeding response with crickets but really liked the baby anoles.

Good luck!

I've never bred buttermilks; in fact, this was my first year with racers at all. After tearing my hair out trying every trick in the book to get my hatchling southern black racers (Coluber constrictor priapus) started on crickets and pinks, I tried catching a few anoles and they took to them like candy!

Shortly thereafter I tried them on ground skinks and house geckos (the latter of which are REALLY easy to come by if you go walking through New Orleans at night!), and now they'll chomp down anything that resembles a lizard. If you can't get them started on insects definitely try lizards; they worked for me!
