Reptile rescues in New England?

Yankee_Em Jul 21, 2009 07:30 PM

Hello, all. I'm new to this forum so if this isn't the appropriate place to post this, I do apologize. I'm new to reptiles, but have done a lot of research and would like to get a corn snake (not right away, but likely within a few months or so). I was wondering if anyone was aware of any decent snake/reptile rescues in the New England area? I'd prefer to adopt a snake that needs a home, if at all possible, but I haven't had much luck finding reptile rescues in my area, and many rescues won't ship their reptiles (understandably). I've always preferred to adopt animals when possible. If anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks very much!

Have you checked with the New England Herp. Society??? how about letting local humane shelters know you are interested?? (even tho not typical, they may get some occasionally) or local veterinarians may have leads to placements. Once in a while I have seen reptiles ( & other pets ) offered free in classified ads in newspapers. Also call the nearest zoos and see what they say...they are frequently offered unwanted pets that they do not wish to accept and may be able to give you some leads. Good luck, I too love taking in the ones that really need a home, and am in the process of adding another snake or two to my household!

Getting to this topic really late, but it caught my eye as I'm also in New England. You could also look on Craigslist and Freecycle. Unfortunately, Freecycle leaves it up to each group's moderator to decide whether or not to allow animals to be "recycled". Ugh, so horrible.
If you have no luck there, Bonnie Keller of Va. Reptile Rescue does ship animals. You may need to wait until summer because of the lovely cold nights we have, but I can tell you that she is a wonderful rescuer who really cares about her animals and puts their welfare first. I got my ball python from her 7 years ago (when I lived in VA). Her website is www.vareptilerescue.org.
