Are babies less social?

JackAsp Aug 01, 2009 12:46 AM

My adults have no qualms about basking or sleeping together, or even just randomly pickng the same general non-basking section to perch in together. I've realized the hatchlings don't do that. They don't seem to have any conflict, but I'm not sure I've ever seen them pick the same sleeping spot and I've never seen them bask without at least six inches between them. At what age do they usually start noticing each other?

Well you know it's that whole girl boy thing, girls thing boys are grosse and boys think girls are yucky, hehe.

Though really I have no clue Jack.

They definitely share the same space, but then mine are spoiled rotten! I imagine that babies have to compete with each other for food in the wild. Mine don't. LOL! Mine share basking spots caves, and my arm.

See, that's the thing: mine COULD compete, but don't even do that! If one sees the other close to catching a cricket, it backs off, even if the one backing off is the larger one. Not that I mind the lack of bullying.

... are they antisocial? Does crowding them together result in missing toes and tail tips the way baby beardies' will scrap with each other?

Rosebuds Aug 01, 2009 04:21 PM

I have five clutches hatched, 18 or so babies. I do not crowd them, but I keep 4-5 together per tank, and only one has lost part of a tail so far, and I don't think that was nipping. I think he got the tail caught on the cave when he was only a day or so old. But like I said, they are fed 2-3 times a day all they can eat crix and salad.

And I thought my baby Chucks were spoiled! Where do you find the time?? Do they all look like baby blimps? No wonder they run up your arms, oh great Earthmother!!! LOL

Rosebuds Aug 01, 2009 04:56 PM

They only get the salad once a day, but its not too hard to scoop up a couple jars of crix and throw them in there. The real pain is when I have to remove all of the excess crix in the evening, but as the babies grow, there are less and less to retrieve.

BTW, I buy 2-3 thousand crix a week! Pigs. LOL!
