Liophis poecilogyrus venom?

Reptile World Aug 02, 2009 12:54 PM

Does anyone happen to know about the Toxicity of venom from Liophis poecilogyrus?

I am just curious as they have always been one of my favorite snakes. They are very nice looking snakes, with turquoise scales each outlined by black and a bright yellow belly.

I was lucky enough to get a few imported specimens before Peru shut down years ago, and they came in as Chaco Swamp Snakes back then. They were extremely docile animals, especially considering they were wild caught adults. I guess that's a good thing since at the time I didn't even know their latin name nor did I know they were rear fanged.

I looked around online, asked around on venomdoc forums, but there's not too much solid information.

Most sources state that they are a harmless species, however there is one reported case of an envenomation requiring hospitalization. I did order a copy of that report, but I still haven't received it.

I am trying to find this species again, as I have been hearing they are coming in from Uraguay/Guyana now instead of Peru, but before I go too crazy looking for them I would really like to know if there venom is anything to worry about, and whether or not they should be treated like a HOT snake, or more like a western hognose.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
