Worlds first female snow red-sided

boxienuts Aug 02, 2009 03:22 PM

Here is an update pic on the worlds first snow red-sided and her albino sister. Even though the snow is very, very clean patternless and pigmentless, if you look closely you can see the reflective remenant of a strong wide dosal stripe indicative of the red-sided. They are both doing well and growing fast, both eat 2 small mice twice a week and both are around 20" and weigh around 60 grams. They should hopfully breed in spring of 2010. I will also be breeding their snow red-sided sibling brother to two different normal Iowa red-sided garters found in my back yard to produce outcrossed double hets for snow. The resulting double hets for snow will be outcrosses between the Kansas and Iowa bloodlines, which hopefully will produce some nice looking albinos, but it may be hard to improve though, as you can see the Kansas one in this photo has a lot of nice red already, but theres only one way to find out, so we shall see in a couple years.

Jeff,

The snow really looks awesome (as does the albino too). It will be interesting to see if there are any color variances as there are in the Iowa snows. Thanks for sharing.

Your right Scott, there may be variances in individuals, and we really don't have a large enough sample size yet, but next year we will probably produce enough to see (we meaning: you and I and anyone else who might produce them next year for that matter). Also it's really too early to tell if there will be any yellowing or striping, or checkering with age too, but so far they are looking really clean. I forgot to mention that even though a different looking albino will be my target for crossing the Iowa and Kansas strain red-sided, it may produce a different looking snow as well. Are you planning to do that same outcrossing as well, since you are keeping one of my normal females? I assume you were, and if not, you are now right? lol
