First vet visit

medic8388 Aug 04, 2009 02:38 PM

Well, I've had Mag for a few weeks now. Last week he fell from his perch (about 30" and broke his tail (tail didn't come off). Over the next few days the tail began to turn gangrenous so a visit to the local exotic vet was in order. All in all it was a very pleasant visit, then again I wasn't the one getting half of my tail removed. Mag is parasite free and she was able to remove the infected portion of the tail at a fracture point. She also took the time to ask about housing and diet to make sure I was doing everything correctly (apparently even though it says UVB on the box dosen't mean its a good UVB bulb. Megaray is on the agenda very soon).

The visit cost $110, which is in line with what I pay to take my dog to the vet. In fact the exam and tests done were similar in nature to what my dog routinely gets when she goes to the vet.

I would highly recommend any new owners take their Igs to the vet. It is worth the money to know your pet is healthy and you have the proper set up (turns out I didn't even though I thought I did).

Let your message be the words for herpers everywhere to live by! These animals that we keep are totally dependent on us for their care and feeding. A $110 vet bill is the least we can do for them, and hopefully it will mean we aren't back at the vets later for some future catastrophe! Good work. Hope Mag is happy with her "bob". LOL

Mag seems to be doing much better now. We have a follow up visit on Friday. For a day or so before the first vet visit Mag was acting very sluggish and hiding a lot. As soon as we got back home he was back to his old self again, it dosen't even seem like he notices half of his tail is gone.

I think I'm making progress taming him as well. He is seeming to do better while being held. Still doesn't like being 'caught', but once I have him he calms down. Trouble with a bigger housing (the 8" Ig has a house that is 48"H 70"L and 20"W) is he has plenty of room to run away from me

I'm sure he will tame down. It just takes time. As for the tail, he might be happy to have "lightened his load". LOL!
