Mexican Musk Turtle Question

rothenfluh Aug 05, 2009 08:03 PM

I have a 45 Gal “H” freshwater tank with a few small spotted puffers and a black ghost knife. I really want to get about a young Mexican Musk Turtle (I know they get very big and I plan to get a bigger tank in the future.) I have never had a turtle and I have a few questions before I get started.

1. Since my tank is almost 3 feet deep, is this too deep for a young MM?
2. Since they are pretty much fully aquatic, do I need a basking area?
3. the puffers are 2” and pretty aggressive, well they bother the as long as it is bigger than them?

Any advice about getting a Mexican Musk would be great, especially on where a good place to get one would be.

Thanks!

Hey, I know this is a late responce but I haven't been to the kingsnake forums in Awhile and jut saw your post. Your 45gal would work till the little guy is about 6-8 inches long, by that time you'll have to upgrade the tank. If your getting a hatchling, you shouldn't really have more then a foot of water, and you would need plenty of things for the musk to grab onto and rest near the surface. They are mainly aquatic but mine likes to bask. However in the beginning I didn't use a basking platform, every week or two I'd take my litle guy out and put him in a bucket with a towel under a MV light. And where to get one, well they aren't to many people that have them available at the moment but a good place to get yours is the turtle source, they have very nice animals.
