Horned lizard scared of ants

spearmint Aug 08, 2009 04:20 PM

For the past week or so I've been trying to feed my horned lizard harvester ants but whenever I put a few in his cage he either runs away from them or closes his eyes when they come near him. I though maybe to many ants was overwhelming him so I tried just one ant at a time and he still got scared. I've also tried slowing the ants down by putting them into the fridge for a few minutes before feeding. what should I do?

Thanks TY

It's been a few days since you posted. Any change in them? What kind of setup do you have? Tank size, type of lighting, sand? What kind of HL do you have and where are you getting the ants from?
Need more info to help you.

It's a short horned lizard and i have him in a 20 gal with play sand a rock pile and lots of other places to hide. He seems to hide under the sand though he has a 60watt basking lamp (I think) and a long uvb bulb. and I order my harvester ants online.

Short horns do not require the quantity of ants that most other species do, and they are better served for the most part with non-harvester ants. BlueMax is the man to speak to if he will comment.
In the mean time, the tank you have is too small. A larger tank is needed to dissipate heat from the lights better, and also will make the lizard feel more at ease. Second, you want to get a bunch of small crickets from petsmart. They generally have two sizes. The large ones are not so great for horned lizards. You might also try a meal worm or waxworm but no more than one or two a day. The temptation will be great to give him a lot of these, but don't. Crickets are best. I believe you can get some non-harvester ants from antsalive. Look into that.
I hope this is helpful.

how offten should you feed him i have had mine for almost a week cant get him to eat ANY THING please help dont what him to die

Mark_Brock Aug 15, 2009 12:20 PM

They should eat twice a day. If you don't have proper lighting, tank size and other things then they may not eat and they will die. Check the link at the bottom of the page and you will find care instructions and other info.
