Brown snake had babies!

snakemaster24 Aug 08, 2009 06:27 PM

Well I have a brown snake Northern ssp. to be exact. She had 12 babies last night. They all shed and are in a sandwhich container with moss and bead a beast. I hope they take earth worms and don't require slugs, can I train them onto earthworms?
Thanks David

Congrats! Whether or not they take earthworms right off the bat is going to completely up to chance. Brownsnakes are genetically programmed from birth to recognize the scent of their food and unfortunately for you, the Northern Brownsnake did not co-evolve with earthworms as a food source (earthworms are a non-native species). You may need to start them off on slug pieces and then wean them over to worms by rubbing small worm pieces in slug slime. It may take time but eventually they should start taking worms without you needing to scent them every time. There is a chance they will take worms without any fuss right off the bat depending on the genetics of the population they came from. Hopefully you'll get lucky. You can find one of his posts on this forum -- I'm not sure when he last posted but just do a search for his name, it's on this page somewhere.

Thanks, today I am going to offer them a small peice of night crawler and hope for the best. I know around here we seem to have more earthworms than slugs. I am going to try and get them feeding today but I am out of twon for a week and until I get back i will not have access to slugs

Wow, Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

Yes they can take worms.

But I have always had the best luck with tiny baby slugs.

As for worms, I had the best results with neonate night crawlers, Flip rocks in wet areas and they are not overly hard to gather.

Good luck!
