Can anyone tell me if it is legal to own a gator in NC? I know crocs and caimans are legal.

American Alligators are native to North Carolina.

a simple look through this site will give you material to browse through for HOURS..

ANY state that has alligators naturally occuring in their boundries has laws in place governing possession. Also as with venomous taxa, you must consider county, and municipal regulations and ordinances.

Recently North Caorlina regulations became much tighter and restrict even more tightly possession of venomous reptiles, constricting snakes and all crocodilians -- except American alligators, which are illegal to own, without certain commercial or zoological exceptions.

North Carolina has permits available to those who qualify for commercial farming of them: http://www.agr.state.nc.us/markets/aquaculture/documents/AquacultureLicenseApplication.pdf (permit application for aquaculture..LARGE SCALE COMMERCIAL ALLIGATOR FARMING, in otherwords doesn't apply to the everyday guy/gal.

BEFORE asking...let your fingers do the walking. In todays age of instant electronic communication, finding laws, is about spending a bit of time..or scrolling through archives on the forums, as these questions get asked ad naseum.

Thanks. I spent hours looking. But it sometimes is hard to understand what they are telling you. I still think it's a dumb law. CB animals don't hurt the wildlife, and if it's a "safty" issue it's even dumber. I can own a saltie but not a gator? Oh well.
