Housing GTP in large exo terra.

blueta Aug 13, 2009 08:38 AM

I've got a question about housing a gtp in the largest exo terra enclosure. I have a 36" wide 18" width, 24" tall exo that I would like to use.

Some concerns are first off the screen lid is very flexible and can be pushed up in the middle rather easily. I would either use silicone, or even better if it works weldon 16 to permanently secure on the top.

The next problem is pretty similar with the top frame above the doors. It's flexible there also, but not so much as the screen top. I can push up on it with some good force and create a 1" gap. Now, I'm pushing pretty hard and I wouldn't have any perches right against the front glass where the snake could get a lot of leverage but I've never owned a gtp and don't know their strength.

So, is anyone using one of these or think they would work?

Oh by the way I could cover 3 sides with black contact paper to help it feel more secure and keeping the humidity up will be no problem (I'm a dart frog keeper).

//I can't fall back on much experience, however the GTP I have doesn't try to push on much of anything. He explores his enclosure every night, yet never seems to push on the lid. However, this could simply be his disposition, and may not mirror that of the majority of GTPs. Regardless, it's always better to be safe, rather than sorry.

To answer your question, however - I think taking some precautions with an enclosure is never a bad thing, and it sounds as if you're doing just that. You should be fine.

on the size issue of your question it depends upon the size of the snake your considering of getting. if the gtp is a neo to yearling I would not suggest a cage of that size. if its an adult it would do more than great in there.
regarding the pushable screens just remember every snake is an escape artist and you wouldnt want to risk it. modify it with wood or acrylic, exos usually need that type of mod anyways for humidity sake

Well, I know that answering this is kind of late, but that's exactly what I use, and my GTP seems to like it. She's never tried to get out of it, although everytime I take her out and then put her back in she explores it all over again before she settles down
