How much do common musk turtles smell!?

cation05 Aug 27, 2009 01:20 PM

I have read a lot of conflicting statements about whether common musk turtles really smell or not. Do they only smell when frightened (most common claim) or is it they they always have an offensive odor to ward off predators (another common claim) I would really like to get one but I'd consider a different type if they really are perpetually smelly no matter how clean their tank is. Please and thanks for replies!

I have only smelled the wild caught ones and they can be pretty strong. I rarely if ever smell any from my captives.

I only have experience which a hatchling, and it only musks if I'm handling it for longer than a minute or so. I don't find it particularly bad, but it is just a baby at the moment.
