I am doing something very wrong

AccidentalHerps Aug 29, 2009 12:29 AM

my third, and only remaining, baby fire skink died today.
I don't get it. from what i can find to read about them i seem to be doing the right things, but around a month old they die.

i have another clutch of eggs in teh incubator, laid on 8/2.

i fed them 2x a day, tiny mealworms, cat food, tiny crickets.
i'm going to try using a reptile multivitamin suppliment with the next batch.

they have shredded aspen to burrow in. they have a heat gradient, they have a water bowl to swim in that gets cleaned daily.

this is very upsetting! someome who has raised these little guys please help!

Sasha

Well,I am not an expert and I only had babies [2 clutches]about 10 years ago.I do not feed mealworms to baby lizards...you might try omitting them...I used small crix and earthworms from my own yard...they loved them.Maybe the cat food should be cut out...these are only guesses...hope someone can help you.One of my old issues of Reptiles mag. had in depth article...if I can find it I'll see if there are any other tips...Angie

thank you for the suggestions.

what I am planning to do with the next batch that hathces is use peat moss, use a calcium and multivitamin suppliments, feed redwigglers and mini mealworms. there is a reptile show here this weekend so i am going to get lots of feeder insects (for everyone here).
the next clutch should hatch in a couple weeks, they were laid on 8/2.

The red worms are great for them...I would still use the baby crix but even if the mealworms are mini I would use them sparingly...just to be on the safe side.Damp peat moss[watch for dead food items so they don't get moldy]Hopefully the calcium supplements will help...little fire skinks are sooo cute..I hope the next group survives !!

Just wonder if you are using calcium supplement uv for them? I used peat moss as a substrate, kept damp...couldn't find my issue in Reptiles mag.on fireskinks..there are care sheets posted on-line but most say to use mealworms whereas I wouldn't...
