naturalistic vivs?

chrisv Aug 30, 2009 05:48 PM

Hi all,

I am in the process of setting up enclosure(s)for a chondro or two and I would love to work at least SOME naturalistic design in.

Live plants would be great, but I understand that there are serious limitations to this proposal.

Is anyone here doing this? does anyone have pics of a naturalistic type viv they are maintaining?

Thanks for any advice!

it's a basin enclosure but it's more or less the same with chondro's

photos thrive, the ficus is managing and the bromeliad lived for a few months before dying of.

Very nice. thanks for the pic. is there an issue with the snake and the exposed bulb?

never have any problems besides larger snakes (boa constrictors and large basins) using them as a perch a night and unscrew them a bit. I have had 20 cages with exposed bulbs for several years.
and I have to feed basins after lights out because they will strike at the hottest thing in the inclosure instead of the f/t prey item, that's no problem with chondro's though they react more to movement than heat.

this kind of lighting isn't the best for life plants though.

I am slowly changing all my cages over to natural. I have two so far. I use pothos for the plants as they are hardy and don't require a lot of light. The light is not an issue since the snakes are nocturnal and are perched during the time the lights are on. Once the timer turns off the lights, my snakes get active. I will also be doing naturalistic cages for my False water cobras as well. Here are pictures of the chondro cages. Unfortunately I shot the pictures in the evening after the lights had shut themselves off.

What kind of soil do you use to plant those pothos? I'm considering doing the same thing. Did you pick up those wood perches from your backyard? Did you treat them prior to setting them in the cage?

Thanks,
Adam

I used a mixture of organic potting soil with sand and perlite in it and some gravel. The branches are from my trees out back and I just wash them with some soap and water. Live branches rarely have internal parasites like dead wood. Dead wood is either washed in a hot bleach solution or is washed and then baked to kill any insects living in it. I've used them for almost 7 years without issue.
