boxienuts - question about hog slop

zelaphez Sep 02, 2009 01:45 PM

I am getting an adult pair of three-toeds from a friend who can no longer care for them. I saw your post about the hog slop and decided to try the same thing. Since I will only have two box turtles, I figured I wouldn't need as much so I cut the recipe in half and added mashed-up lobster roaches. I ended up making a total of 20 "meatballs". How long does your batch last you, since I see 24 meatballs in your picture, and I figure you have a good bit more box turtles than I do. If I feed one meatball per turtle per day, the batch would only last me 10 days. Did I make the meatballs too big or something (they are about 1.5-2 inches in diameter)? How often do you feed this stuff? Like, is this a staple diet or do you feed it in addition to other things?

Thanks,
Bryan

...who also knows about this stuff would also be appreciated. It doesn't have to be just boxienuts.

Thanks,
Bryan

Turtles don't need to eat every day. I feed mine 3x per week. Around here, a hungry adult turtle will typically eat about 2 tablespoons worth of whatever is on the menu.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, just saw this post, wasn't ingoring you, but like Steph said 2-3 times per week is plenty often. Likely they wouldn't eat every day consistently even if you offered and you would waste a lot or they would become grossly obese if they did eat every day. Mine only eat a half a meatball per turtle at best in the middle of summer, of course I make mine about twice the size of a golfball. I usually make 2-3 batches per season depending on the weather and their appetites. I usually feed 1-2 times per week in the spring and fall and 2-3 in the summer, but if you are in the south they may eat and metabolize more.
