Help! Butt-face frog?

jenipa02 Sep 02, 2009 08:43 PM

About a year ago I saw an interesting frog in a pet store. When its hind legs were together it looked like a face. I didn't purchase it at the time because I already had two frogs but now that my frogs have passed on I am looking to find a new pet. Does anyone have any idea of what the name of this butt-face frog really is? Thanks!

At first when I read your message I thought "no way is anybody going to respond to this". That being said, I think I found it.

Take a look at the Colombian Four-eyed Frog

This may or may not be of concern to you but all of the Columbian Four-eyed Frogs in the market are wild-caught imports. If you have any interest in the conservation of herps in their native habitats, I'd suggest being very careful when dealing with wild-caught imports.

Also, from what I have read, this species can be very difficult to keep alive in captivity for an extended period of time.

Carefull of what? Just so you know, the best way to help them in nature is to breed them in captivity. No one would want wild ones once they are produced in captivity. The only person hurt would be the frog collectors! Like the Leopard Gecko! Whats the demand for wild cought ones now. Vic

That name is an insult to a beautiful interesting animal. I hope most herpers don't use it.

Pleurodema brachyops

Here's a short video of kim's male calling. They are very cool frogs.

There's 2 sides to every coin. Captive breeding is definitely a way to slow the collection of wild frogs, however, that does not mean go rape the land for frogs in the pet trade. There are many captive breeding projects in the works for conservation of endangered species that do not involve collecting thousands from native lands. There's really nothing for him to be "careful" of because the frogs have already been collected, so with that being the case, the faster someone breeds them, the better for both sides.

Carlton, I kinda thought the same thing. Besides, isn't the "butt faced frog" name kinda backwards? Their faces don't look like their butts, their butt's look like a face. So shouldn't they be called "face butted frogs"? lol
