Determining sex of young cresties

nri Sep 11, 2009 12:52 AM

I just aquired a fairly young crested gecko and wanted to know if she is old enough to determie sex. I was told it was about six months but we don't know for sure but it looks to me like it is a little older. It does not have a bulge yet but it weighs 26.3 grams. Can anyone give an estimate on age? And if the sex can be determined at this point. I already have a proven male and didn't want to take the chnace of them fighting. Thanks for your time...

It can take as much as 9 months before it is possible to accurately sex crested geckos. Best to keep them separated till the new one is at least 9 months old. A female crested gecko with tail should be at least 35g before breeding and a year old, or older.

Only other way to visually sex a crested gecko is by looking at the rows of pores along the underthigh and before the vent. If I recall correctly males have over 2 rows of pores..which often just look like little holes in the scales, one per scale. Females have these pores as well but only have one or two rows.
