Identify material around eye

mwrinkle Sep 14, 2009 05:10 PM

Sorry for the poor pictures but my camera on my ohone is not that good and I am not an accomplished photographer. Basically he has a reddish/brown discoloration around the back of the eye and on the bottom of the lid. Close up look with a magnifying glass, it does not look like mites rubbing the area with a paper twoel removes nothing moving and rubbing areas of the animal with mineral oil does not reveal anything scurring to survive. Rubbing the area with a wet paper towel does slightly discolor the towel. He does rub it on cage furniture ocassionally and i am treating the area with antibiotic and antifungal ointmemts.
What do you think?

Some type of infection going on, maybe baterial. Did you get a chance to get the terramycin yet? Works wonders on eye infections. He looks sad :0(

Does he have any other places that are reddish like that? Have you looked with magnifying glass all over him?

Also I noticed in first pic his mouth is opened a bit, does it always stay open like that or is he having a hard time breathing?

His mouth is open becuase he is pissed at me, he does not want to be handled any more having been subjected to constant handling for antibiotics from the previous two months and recent attempts to keep him hydrated and fed.
No I can't find anything else on him like what you see on the eye, it may be shed relsted somehow, he just went through a shed after a soak this weekend.

The ointment works wonders even outside the eye. As far as food toss him a moth and see if that interests him.

I don't know where I would get a moth at the bat of an eye but I'm desperate enough to try anything if he doesn't have to be forced. The poor thing backs away and mouth gapes when ever the cage is opened.

That is sad... it's a shame he must feel so threatened by everything. Just leave an outside light on and see if you attract any moths. Sometimes even when they will not go after any food you give them, they will get excited over a moth flying around their cage. Or try bigger bugs, bigger sized cricket or roach, something that seems different to him.
