Housing together?

Dj_Squatch Sep 17, 2009 07:17 PM

Hi, I have been doing allot of research on housing anacondas together and haven't found anything. I currently have a female yellow that is getting ready to transfer into a 7'x 4' paludarium setup in a few months. I am very interested in getting a male green and am wondering if it is suitable/acceptable to house a female yellow with a male green together. I have been doing a decent amount of research on breeding and would like to produce some hybrids sometime down the road. Any help would be great, thanks! Mike

Just be prepared for the possibility of the bigger eating the smaller. I have a green that was an exclusive snake eater for some time.

That wouldn't be good. Do you have any suggestions to keep this from happening or should I just keep them in separate enclosures? Thanks again!

I would recommend separate enclosures for a couple reasons. One is feeding time. one or the other would need to be out of the cage while the other animal eats. I have seen people lose snakes by one starting a meal and then becoming the meal as the larger snake starts on the other side. Also I would strongly recommend separate enclosures if they are not similar in size. Also its harder to monitor the waste of your animals (one animal could be backed up and you wouldn't know for some time). I have done it quite a few times with smaller snakes (always the same size and species)and always regret it.

My two cents..

Thanks,
Ed

Yeah you do have some good points there. I think I better keep em' separate. The yellow uses the water as a toilet enough as it is....I can't imagine twice that much in one enclosure. Thanks allot guys! Mike

i am by no means an expert in this field, but as the old cliche goes "better safe than sorry".. good luck!

House them separately. It's better all the way around. Keep in mind hybrids can be a challenge to produce and an even bigger challenge to get rid of as there is not a real big market for them.
