11x7x5 too small for rats?

jamesalternafan Sep 26, 2009 07:58 PM

I have gotten a couple of 11x7x5 rodent breeding lab tubs. I was going to breed mice in them but have been debating doing rats.

What size groups of mice and rats do people have experience keeping in this size?

I will be feeding about 20 adult kings which I was going to switch to rat pups. I also have 8 balls which I would raise up some rats for in a large tank. I also have hatchling kings which will not take rat pinks even fresh borns. I was thinking of going half rats and half mice to cover all my feeding needs and freezing any excess.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

IMO these are mouse tubs. Personally I would probably consider them a waste but you could go with a small mouse group in one...like maybe a 1.3 esp. if you weren't raising all the babies to wean.

I am a space waster...but over the years find it easiest for me and the animals. Mice go in 15X20 tubs and rats are in 18X24 cages.Nest boxes (recycled cereal and tissue boxes etc) and some have wheels. Groups are usually 1.6 for mice and 1.4 for rats. But I am eclectic in my keeping and go by feel so much over the years that it is hard to say....this is how to do it.

Sonya,

I would like to know more about your rat cage set up. In your above post you gave only two out of three cage dimensions, what is the third dimension?

How much cubic space do you allow per rat? I am confused on that issue, since I read so many conflicting points of view.

I need to rework my cage set up, and restart with a new small rat colony. I only have two snakes to feed, but the nearest source for rodents is over 130 miles away.

Thank you, in advance, for the time out of your busy schedule.

Third dimension on the rat cages is 18...they live in condos. I put a wheel in when I can. I do use a couple 20long tanks for grow outs. Mice are in deep tubs too....since I hate the whole "lets jump out while she is cleaning" thing..so they are probably a foot deep. 56 qt or something sterlite Walmart specials. I don't know for cubic feet per rodent since pet people will fight one thing and labs habitually use another. Google it. I had a site once but have changed systems and am starting from scratch. This is NOT a great set up for most neat, clean, pro looking areas.....Not my image. But hey, my rodents make enough to feet my herps, cover their own costs and often buy parrot foods too. So I don't complain.
