Alternatives to feeding pinkies to KSB's

SandBoaMorphs Sep 28, 2009 03:02 PM

I have some young KSB's.

I cannot find live pinkies in my area (Birmingham, Alabama). I can get live crickets or baby lizards. Wouldn't these be available naturally in the wild?

Thoughts, concerns, ideas?

I've teased them with f/t pinkies and even brained them but the only thing to come out of it is a knife I'm hesitant to use.

#1 Set up a couple of mice colonies to feed them.
#2 Go the the Birminham reptile show. I know of at least one vendor from my area (KY) that drives to it monthly. You can stock up on some &/or at least get the colonies going.

Have they ever eaten? I sometimes have issues getting them to start. If all else fails you can assist feed them a crawler tail. Not too fun, but you do what need doing.

I'm helping a buddy of mine feed like 80 that they had born. Luckily I produce pinkies several times the amount I can use in a month.

Send me an email if you need to and I'll hook you up with the guy that goes to birmingham. He can bring you pinkies or whole colonies.

While I have heard of a single KSB taking a single cricket I do not think it is the way to go. I agree with the above post. Buy a few adult mice and breed them.

Best of luck!

Thanks Travis...

I don't know anything about raising mice. What does it all entail? How much space, time, etc.

I definitely want your buddy to bring some pinkies.

They have fed on live pinkies, I just don't have a supplier and have never had this problem. I bought a snow and an albino at the same time which hadn't fed on f/t's and they've already had two each.

Thanks again.

Mice are EASY. Go to the local walmart and buy 2-3 10 gallon aquariums, screen lids and water bottles. Going to run you about $25 for each set up. Use aspen as the bedding. DO NOT USE CEDER OR PINE. It can cause respiratory problems with mice/rats. Put 1.4 adult mice in each aquarium and presto you have babies.

Don't keep too many adults in the aquariums because they will drop the pinkie production. Make sure you feed them well.

I've already sent you contact information for finding some of the stuff you need. You may be able to find other set ups you like better.

Any questions feel free to ask.
