Disposing rat/mice litter?

insangelic Sep 29, 2009 11:58 AM

Hi Everyone,

I breed rats in a 6 level mortar rack and a few mice in a lab cage. They produce quite alot of waste and I am wondering if anyone knows of a great way to dispose of the litter? I live in the Bay Area, CA and the yard waste bins specifically state no feces. I can keep dumping it in the trash bin but would like to find a more eco friendly solution. I plan to use biodegradeable bags too. Any suggestions would be great!

I also live in the bay area and used to do the same, I put it in the green waste can until they told me I couldn't. Now I throw it all in the trash and have not found any better way.

I suppose you could compost it but probably too much volume and would create more compost than you could even think of using.

composting.....they will sooner or later knock on your door and tell you to stop....period....manure is illegal they'll say....
.I used to have a pile....and I get like 6 ? 35 gallon cans a week .....big pile......(first 3 years i got rid of it once a year by advertising "free pine mulch"
...gone in 3 days and still had phone calls for weeks afterwards......weird

now I use 2 large totes....$25 a month each....so it costs me $600 a year for trash instead of like $200 and less....

....only other solution is to find a farm, mulch company, that might take it.....even in communities that have composting facilities they may not take it....they should....

...good luck....make calls.....

I recycle it into my outdoor wood furnace which heats my rodent building. I'm not familiar with your location, but you might be able to put it in a 55 gal metal drum and just burn it. Or compost it as others suggested, then you can resell the earthworms to fish tackle stores.
