Do you keep your tegus as an indoor pet?

Flavia Guimaraes Sep 30, 2009 10:19 AM

My tegus live in my bed room.He sleeps in my bed, or in a hole he made on the sofa cloth (uder the sofa). I put an UVB ligt on my bathroom and every day when he wakes up he goes there to get warmer. He has his own food and water bowl. He likes to roam around the bedroom and the bathroom, he poops always on the same spot just under the shower so its easy for me to clean it. He is clean, doesnt have a strong smell and very tame.

I havent seen here photos of tegus being kept inside the house , as a free roaming pet, and i wonder why.

I have four tegus and the idea of having them all free roam just isn't appealing to me. It sounds messy. I do know people who are able to keep their iguanas free roaming, but they aren't as active as tegus.

Another thing to consider is that in Brazil, you are closer to the ideal circumstances than we are in the US, especially if you do not have an air conditioner in the house. IN most US homes, the air conditioner or heater is running all the time which keeps the temperature and humidity lower than a tegu would refer. So we keep them in enclosures and recreate the natural habitat inside.

One of our Female Tegus is A free Roaming Tegu in our house but we do keep an enclosure for her to get her humidity and basking in. she enjoys walking around the house and hanging out but i wouldnt advise it unless they are atleast 3ft (otherwise they tend to get places you wouldnt think of. haha

either way tegus are great pets and a joy to look at.
