Inter-species fostering?

hissenia Oct 08, 2009 12:41 PM

Anyone else have success with inter species fostering? There have been a few times when a domestic rat neglects her litter so Ive tried mixing the rat pinkies in with ASF rat litters and gerbils litters. surprisingly they have been accepted. I even had a Mouse successfully raise a ASF litter.. just a fun part of the rat breeding process i guess.

my common ones are Peromyscus raising common house mice (after I take /need all the Peromyscus pinks/fuzz)

Chinese hamsters raising mouse pinks (same reason)

I have thrown asfr in with chinese hamster or mice , I have thrown other things around....only thing I ever did/do with rats is to combine litters after needed a cage for a new mother or after using half of each litter anyways...might as well combine them.....(rats are one female per cage after dropping)...

I have only had success to weaning with mice to mice of various species (IE Mus mus raising Microtines) but not mice to hamsters....they may go a week or even two and then there is wholesale slaughter....Like they suddenly figured it out. Rats to other rat moms but not had success fostering pups to another species.

My rats have no issue with fostering mice litters.
