Baby alligator

atomicpeacock Oct 15, 2009 10:42 AM

I have recently been given a baby alligator, i have a decade of experience with pythons and other large reptiles but this is my first time with a crocodile. She is around a foot give or take, I attached some photos, im not sure what breed she is exactly? Does anyone have experience with them or similar breeds? She is in an aquarium 2 feet by 5 feet a quarter of it is piled up with stones for a basking spot and the rest has water 5 inches deep. She didnt eat the first day but she had a goldfish yesterday. How often do you guys feed your baby crocodilians and alligators? and are gold fish ok? I am thinking of swtiching to chunks of chicken with calcium supplements

That looks like my little guy when I first got it. I believe it is a spectacled caiman or a hybrid. Goldfish are horrible for them. I used rosy reds or minows from a bait store. chuncks of chicken are ok but not great (the kind you buy at the supermarket) because they have growth hormones and all kinds of chemicals. Your best bet is whole prey items like crickets pinkies etc things like that. He will outgrow that tank pretty quickly so start thinking of his next house.

Greetings,

You have a baby Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), locality of yours appears to be east africa. More information about this species can be found on crocodilian.com

Good luck with this little man-eater
