Is terra cotta safe underwater?

Venomlust Oct 16, 2009 03:53 PM

Hey all, I was just curious if terra cotta is safe to use as a submersible furniture element. Will it leach anything harmful into the water? I know it's just clay but the red kind contains iron oxide, which is why I'm asking this question.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Did a bit of research and it would seem to be safe.

Anyone of the mind terra cotta is NOT safe? If so, why?

If you have expensive animals in the tank, I would not risk using the pots because you don't know if there are impurities in the clay. Better to use glazed pots, or large diameter plastic tubes.
