Panther mouth open

SooperScoot Oct 17, 2009 01:24 PM

My 5 month old panther chameleon will occasionally open his mouth for a few seconds, kind of like hes yawning, while sometimes puffing his stomach. What does it mean? Ive only seen him do it when hes basking so I thought he might be overheating but the light is only a 60w and is a good 7inches away. Not to mention he has plenty of room to move away. Hes drinking great and eating like champ. What could this mean?

It could very well be that he is thermoregulating by doing this. Is there any sign of excess mucus in his mouth or wheezing when he breaths?

There's no excess mucus or any other sign of illness. I think you might be right about the thermoregulating though. As I said, I've only seen him do it when hes basking. Do you think its too hot? Too cold?
