new pet lizard, unknown ID

cap_extreme Oct 17, 2009 09:02 PM

i purchased these two lizards at a small pet store. the sales person seemed to know what she was talking about and im not new to reptiles. she mentioned the lizards were "dwarf sunset lizards". i have never heard of them before and was very enthusiastic because they seemed like small monitors. i asked for a care sheet and never recieved it and was definatly getting the run around from the pet store. im currently caring for them as if they were bearded dragons with the humidity slightly higher than noraml. personally i think they look alot like yellow ackies but i would definatly value a second opinion.

It's an ameiva,I don't know much about them,so check them out online.I think there are a few in that family of lizard.

It appears that what you have are Latastia longicaudata. Based on the latin name I would call them long tailed lizards. Care is imilar as for the larger ameivas, but these guys do like a hotter basking spot. Definitely be sure to provide a burrowable substrate as well. I have not yet observed this species to take vegetable matter, so feed a variety of insects.

its a red amieva. Its not a checkerd or spotted whiptail eventhough they are in the same family. thoes lizards are grey and black.

I had a look and you may want to look into the Gila spotted whiptail, native to Arizona. It's in the same family of lizards and they seem to get a similar pattern.Sorry I can't help more.
