garters crossing the road

boxienuts Oct 18, 2009 05:55 PM

I bet I saw at least 20 garter snakes on the roads today, unfortunately half were run over. Some red-sided, lots of plains, and also saw a few brown snakes. We have had some cold, cloudy weather the last week or more, and today we finally had a sunny day with a south wind, so I assume they were taking advantage of the solar power to get them to a place to spend the winter. I have never seen such a mass migration on one day, the weather conditions must have concentrated the effort.

Jeff, I only wish I could witness a mass migration of snakes! That's unfortunate though that so many were crushed. The sad part is that a lot of people actually go out of their way to hit them.

Jeff,

That must have been cool to see that. They must have been congregating near their hibernaculum. Very cool !

actually i was seeing them all driving over the country gravel roads all over a 60 mile radius, most near streams.

All of our local garters seem to have vanished already.

Been getting really cold at night, so they are likely very close to the dens by now.
