Rabbits VS Rats

Z_G_Reptiles Oct 24, 2009 11:07 AM

I was wondering which is healthier, Rabbits or Rats, I can get rabbits local for half the price then I can order rats but if rats are healthier to bloods I'll stick with them.

Thanks
Zack

Doesn't really matter other than Rabbits tend to be more food than you need. I have 12 year old borneos that are 24lbs and live on one xlarge rat every other week or so. I only offer large prey after egg laying. You feed them too much, they get fat and get useless. However, if you feed them less frequently, or smaller rabbits (under 1lb) you should be fine.

Thanks Rich, I was thinking about a 1lb rabbit every 3 weeks and see how that goes and if it gets them to start being heavy maybe space it out to every 4 weeks but nutrision wise, I would think rabbits would be healthier because they're so much more musculer.

Which rodent has more bone matter ?? Thus more available calcium..Is calcium essential for egg development and structual growth of the snake ??

good point Tim, I have not studied rats and rabbits much but would assume that rabbits have much more bone matter then rats would due to their physical structure and build. anyone please currect me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

I have used both for years. Personally I think only the biggest blood should have rabbits and then only sparingly. You have to have a really good basking spot or else it takes a long time to digest such a large meal. Bloods are notorious for obesity and overweight animals are poor breeders. Rats Are the perfect size . I have also fed young chicks, degus, and sugar gliders with good results
