Hi I was wondering if anyone is aware of a study or rating that has been done on mercury vapor bulbs. It looks like many manufactures are now making them and I don't know if one is better than another. I have heard good things about mega rays, however some of the other brands are available closer to home. I guess the 2 main issues are how long do each of the bulbs provide useable u. v. and at what level. Any info or personal experience with these bulbs would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

The best place to find out about MVBs for reptiles is this website:
http://www.uvguide.co.uk/

Personally, I use Mega Rays and have been very happy with them. Not so happy with some of the other brands. Avoid very cheap UVB - it's NOT worth it. If it's cheap, it's not providing what you need. I also strongly recommend getting a UVB meter (I have a Solarmeter 6.2) to monitor your lamps. Use the UV Guide website to find one that is reliable and has a good light spectrum (the wrong wavelengths of UVB are more harmful than helpful), then use the UVB meter to only replace it when you need to. The meter will pay for itself fairly soon.
