Housing Geckos together?

grooter2 Nov 11, 2009 12:51 AM

I know a lot about snakes, however geckos are new to me. I am doing a lot of research though. I hope this isn't a question like "can you house a boa with a ball python" or I am going to sound like a real newbie to geckos.

My question is can you house a Giant gecko and a Crested gecko in the same cage? Cage is 2ft wide 2 ft deep and 3 feet high.

I believe that they require the same temperatures and humidity. The cage is around 83F in the hot spot, ambient temperature at 78F and at the bottom 70F, at night all these temps drop 4-5 degrees. Humidity at the bottom is at 90% and at the top 70%.
The only reason i could think of why it would be a bad idea is if the Giant gecko attacked the crested gecko, is this likely or no? I would be buying them both as babies.

I would also of course feed them separately! Individual containers

Depends on what you mean by giant gecko. If you are talking about R. leachianus than definately not. Leachie's eat crested geckos in the wild so I'd strongly advise against it. If you mean a giant day gecko than that would probably be fine. As with any animal, more species/individuals can mean more problems but a giant day gecko and a crested gecko could live together as long as there was enough space and cover for both animals.

I always make it a rule to keep my species separate..even keeping cresteds (as adults) together is a risky business...males of the same species would fight and potentially kill eachother....

If you are thinking of keeping leachies with cresteds i would strongly advise against it....as the previous post mentioned, they are natural enemies...

Cresteds also have a tendancy to drop their tails if they are nervous. Which, in reality, isnt a big deal...but they dont grow back.

The fact of the matter is that unless you have a very large enclosure, phelsuma geckos tend not to seek out company...and both of the species may stress if you keep them together. stress=reduced immune system=illness....

but thats just how i feel..im sure others would disagree..

Also for crested's anything above 80 in temp is not good and stresses them, my opinion is that's its better safe them sorry and would keep them separate.
