Drymarchon corais range comparison

nudigi Nov 17, 2009 02:01 AM

I'm not exactly a newbie herper, but I was wondering if any of the experts or those who study snakes alot know how the range of the Drymarcon corais ssp compares to that of Boa constrictor ssp? I was reading that Boa constrictor ssp have the largest range of any reptile (Russo). I know that it is larger than Drymarchon corais ssp, but I was wondering by about how much? The Drymarchon corais ssp range is pretty large to my knowledge; I wonder how much larger it could be if Drymarchon corais couperi still occupied its original range (say 19th or early 20th century).

Interesting topic. If you consider the Eastern indigo and yellowtail cribo to be different species than the blacktail cribo and its subspecies, then I guess the common boa would have a larger range. If you consider all of the Drymarchon to be subspecies of yellowtail cribo, their range is larger for that group, even with the unfortunate disappearance of Eastern indigo from parts of the United States. And I'm wondering if the total range for all of the milk snake sub-species is greater than either boa or Drymarchon.

If you are talking about the largest range of a single species i think that title goes to the European viper, VIPERA BERUS which happens to be the only species found within the arctic circle. it` range is immense.

The most abundant species on the planet is i believe the yellow bellied sea snake.

correct me if i am wrong. good question though.
