Why are so many so uptight about hybrids

caramia12 Nov 26, 2009 04:42 AM

I think hybrids are so cool and some can be so beautiful. As long as the seller is honest about the genentics what's the big deal? I've noticed with each passing year I see more and more hybrids at the reptile shows. So the market must be getting bigger. Besides they are your snakes and you have every right to breed them however you want.

Because some people think they are going to tank over the world and destroy the industry. I honestly find that stupid.

They just can't handle the fact the most big name breeders are doing it and there's a growing market for it. Yep, I totally agree.

As I posted in other forums, I dont think anyone is necessarily anti hybrid, but the fact remains there are several species many are leary of working with due to tainted lineage and hybridization. One that comes to mind most is the LA Pinesnake. Apparently several hybrid zonatas and milks are out there as well and now you have folks who feel what they love about the hobby has been ruined. Also, no one really knows what happens to the mass amount of hybrid babies that get sold off and past the original breeders hands, regardless of how "big name" they are or ethical.

There are most definitely ppl that are militantly anti-hybrid.
I can name a good few, namely 99% of the members at www.HerpFamily.com they beat on me every single chance they get.
And Nick Mutton at Inland Empire is one of the most anti-hybrid ppl you can find anywhere. This isn't derogatory, he will admit to it.

I just like to put it in a math equation.
X = number of species a purist can own.
X · X = number of animals an open minded herper can own.
(stupid kingsnake doesn't allow html so I can't make the proper symbols for a math equation. As a web designer, yes denying simple text formatting html tags is stupid)

their militant anti-hybrid behaviour is based more on misrepresentation and tainting of pure lines than the actual production or existence of the hybrids themselves. I suspect by your login name you are a python fan. How would you feel if you bought a pair of "pure" diamond pythons and found out there was coastal carpet blood in them? Or a pair of sumatran blacks and found out shorttail blood was in them? Are you going to justify that its OK because they look "just as good", or think its a much better animal because it is a hybrid? The simple fact is I dont think you will. You will be PO'd just like anybody else in the same situation would be. Hybrid lover or not, you were DUPED and did not receive what you paid for by an unscrupulous or unknowing vendor. Please keep the perspective that many, many people have been swindled buying pure animals that turned out to be questionable, and even outright hybrids. Some unfortunately found out much later after they in turn produced animals they sold as pure. So now they have their own ethics being questioned by the herp community. It can be bad, bad business.

because some hybrids are passed as locality snakes, pure snakes and some ,actually a whole lot of hybrids...you cannot tell what they are....people end up thinking they are what they are not....mistaking them as one species when they are actually two...well...subspecies even.....

purists want pure lineage....even as far as locale not just genetics.....

it's the confusion not the hybrids.....

....then they take their golden doodle and pugle for a walk and yell about it.....

I think so many people (myself included) are uptight about "certain" hybrids because in many cases, people are breeding species together that would never encounter one another in the wild, thereby "playing god" if you will. There's a reason these animals evolved the way they have. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for hybrids that encounter one another in the wild naturally.
