A Question of Gender...

MMathis Nov 28, 2009 03:08 PM

I know that gender is determined by the temperature at which the eggs were incubated (I assume that happens early on??). What are the chances that eggs from the same clutch, incubated together, could produce both males & females?

Both of my 2006 babies (clutch-mates) are males. I found 2 separate clutches in 2007 that I incubated, and also found 2 babies loose that hatched on their own. No idea if these two were clutch-mates or not, but found them about a month apart and they seemed to be different sizes.

I've been trying to observe characteristics in the(2007) babies, but think they're a little young - it was just this year that the 2006 babies showed positive signs. But some are sorta looking like males.

The chances are very good of this happening, again, dependent on temperature.
Higher temps tend to yield more females, lower temps more males, and in between temps, both, in the same clutch.

So, not unusual at all. Happens here with regularity.

So hoping I get at LEAST one female out of the 8 babies since I will continue to keep their habitats separated by boys & girls! At this time it's Zippo [the mom] in one habitat, and the 8 growing babies in the other one -- it's an outdoor habitat. Guess I will eventually find homes for some of the babies...

I thought I read somewhere this summer that sex determination via temp does not occur early on or at the start of the incubation period, which is what I intuitively thought or would have guessed just like you, but rather is dependent on the incubation temperature towards the middle of developement a few weeks before hatching. shrug.
That one in the top right pic sure looks like a "clown" faced male, should be a really nice looker.
