New to Leopard Geckos

JWilmot Dec 01, 2009 03:37 PM

Hello,
My wife and I are new to Geckos forum and thought we would introduce ourselves. A friend of mine had a Leopard for 13 years and when I told him we where thinking of getting one offered his to us. He said he did not have the time she deserved and would prefer she go to a home that could spend time with her. He never named her so we decided to call her Padme.
We have had her for a few months and decided she would enjoy a partner. After many hours of research we decided to start breading her.So we found an adult male and named him Anakin. We already have a local retailer willing to buying all the young. We thought this would be a great learning experience for out 2 boys.

These are some of the pics I took today of them. they have been together about a week now. The habitat is the one Padme came with fron my friend. As I understand it the babies will look like Padme and have Anakin's recesive genes.
Any advice or comments you would like to share for a new person in the breeding of Leopards would be welcome.
Padme is a normal leopard or so I was told
Anakin is an albino or so I was told

Hey nice to have you guys here. Love Padme and Anakin, both are very pretty leo's, I wish you all the best with them.

I have been into lizards as pets, and breeding a few species for many years, but I also have just started in the past month with a pretty pair of snow leopards. So I also am learning many new things with mine.

I'm Eve and it is nice to meet you, a bit slow here of late but the people who are here seem super nice !

Nice pics, keep em coming!

Welcome! Indeed it looks like you have yourself a High Yellow Normal as well as an Albino. However there are three different strains of Albino Leopard Geckos and telling them apart is not always easy. You can continue doing research through kingsnake.com and several search engines. The three strains are Tremper, Bell and Rainwater (Las Vegas). Best wishes!

Thank you both for your replies.

Anakin was bought localy so I can get ahold of him to find out the type of albino he is. I don't know at this stage of the game that I am looking to do much in the morph area, the local retailer does not care what the young are as he sells most of them as pets not breeders.

We chose Anakin due to his eyes, very vivid in color.

Looking forward to posting here and learning as much as we can.

PS: I posted some pics of our new BRB in there forums if anyone is interested.

Hi congrats on the new additions to your family. first off I want to let you know that you are correct the off spring they will be normal het for albino, if you breed two babies together you will get 25% normal 50% normal apearring but carrying the albino gene (not way to tell if they are het until they are bred) and 25% albino. If you breed the baby back to the Albino you will get 50% albino and 50% normal het for albino.

I'm not sure that Padme is a normal though it looks like she may have some tangerine in her if you could post a top pic of her like the one you have of Anakin were we could see all the markings and colors on her back.

Hello Niki,

Thanks for you reply and info on how the breeding works.

This is the only pic I have of Padme full body.
