Deformed feet on Crested

sra Dec 03, 2009 02:21 PM

My boyfriend has a baby crested gecko, it is kept in a small shoe-box tub with a long vine for climbing (that has fake leaves on it), with paper towels as a substrate along with a water bowl. He feeds it repashy diet every night, sometimes every other night. I took the gecko out today and noticed that it's toes are malformed. It looks like some are stuck together and the tissue is dead. I keep snakes but from what I understand geckos can have stuck shed around their toes and left untreated it can kill the tissue. Well I would try to take the skin off but all I see is just dead tissue. I think it might be too late. I can try to get pictures later but I don't have my camera with me. If anyone has any imput on what to do in the meantime, that would be great. We are going to make a vet appt for the gecko but cannot do it until next week. Thanks gecko lovers!

you can try soaking the gecko...find a shallow container, and add luke warm water to it so there's enough to submerge the feet. It needs to be a small container with lid so the gecko doesn't just climb out of the water. After about 10 minutes or so, gently pull the dead skin from his toes. Mineral oil can also be directly applied to the feet as well, though this is likely to seriously hamper the gecko's ability to climb till the oil comes off.

Keep in mind that crested geckos can 'curl' their toes up when they are not clinging on something, but should be able to spread them out fully when grasping a surface. Hold him in your hand and let him climb around your fingers to observe how he is spreading and grasping with his feet and toes.

I have tried soaking his feet... the skin and toes are dark brown and seem "dead"... they will not separate and he cannot cling on like he normally should. Like I said in my earlier post, I could not find the stuck shed that would be causing the problem. This looks different. Thanks anyways.
